Fancy Dancer

I wrote this song for Robin’s and my 25th anniversary, however in a strange but happy circumstance, Jerry and Liz Levine (my long-time musical partners) and my wife and I all got married on the same day in 1981. We didn’t know each other then – too bad, we could’ve started the band a lot earlier! – but it seemed natural to bring this song out for both couples.

As for the dancing part, yes I am hard on my partner’s toes. It’s one of the reasons I took up guitar.

I look forward, to your face in the morning,

I look forward, to your touch in the night.

I look forward, to when we are dancing,

When we’re moving together, and I am holding you tight.

And though I am not a… fancy dancer,

And I’ll step onto your toes.

We are partners, that’s the way this story goes.

We are partners, that’s the way this story goes.

I don’t know who leads,                          [bridge]

Which probably means it isn’t me.

And when the rhythms change,

Although I try there can be, no guarantee

Long ago now, we used to dance in the gymnasium,

Moving close together… any chance we could.

And though the years have made me quite aware of how we fit together

I don’t think the two of us dance, as often as we should.

There are times when we waltz in perfect rhythm.

There are times the mileage shows.

But we are partners, that’s the way this story goes

We are partners, that’s the way this story goes.

And though I am not a… fancy dancer,

And I’ll step onto your toes.

We are partners, that’s the way this story goes.

We are partners, that’s the way this story goes.
